PAVEMENT REHABILITATION

JZN Engineering provides quality services to find the most responsive and cost effective solutions for pavement rehabilitation. Our experience with pavement rehabilitation allows us to prepare and carry out a comprehensive investigation process that can help identify the causes of pavement failure and provide effective solutions and recommendations for the pavement rehabilitation process. The investigation process aims to find possible causes of pavement distress and the extent of deterioration of the existing pavement. The investigation phase includes data collection, characterization of pavement distress, analysis of data, hypothesis of pavement failure and recommendations. The site study usually involves soil characterization by means of performing soil exploration borings and/or test pits, and ground water seepage evaluation.

JZN Engineering provides construction quality control and assurance during the pavement rehabilitation process. This process includes inspection during the excavation of unsuitable soils, backfill and compaction of soils, subgrade testing and concrete and asphalt testing.

MULTI SITE PAVEMENT REHABILITATION

JZN Engineering provided quality services to more than 15 Wells Fargo branch offices to find the most cost effective solutions for pavement rehabilitation. The Bank offices were located in new Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Our investigation involved taking core samples in various locations in the existing parking lots to analyze the most cost effective solution to rehabilitate the existing parking lots. Analysis of the parking lots included a pavement failure analysis and characterization of the pavement distress.

JZN Engineering provided geotechnical investigation and engineering services to assess the subsurface soils conditions and provided recommendations for pavement design. The pavement analysis and investigation allowed us to provide recommendations for preparation of bearing surfaces and to provide quality control in order to insure that the rehabilitation process would hold up for years to come.

RETAIL CENTER PARKING LOT REHABILITATION BOROUGH OF STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK

The existing parking lot is part of a Retail Center located at 2040-2060 Forest Avenue in the Borough of Staten Island, New York.

JZN conducted a geotechnical investigation consisting of drilled soil boring explorations within the parking lot and pavement core recoveries in order to estimate the engineering characteristics of the pavement bearing and subgrade soils. JZN performed a visual observation of the parking lot which was determined to be in poor conditions with a significant amount of longitudinal and alligator cracks, potholes and evidence of patching.

JZN determined that the parking lot pavement distresses were caused as a result of excessive loading, poor subgrade conditions and water infiltration between the pavement overlays.

JZN provided different options for the existing pavement rehabilitation which included milling of the existing surface course following restauration to existing grades with flexible pavement; and full depth repair consisting of complete pavement removal, followed by subbase preparation, followed by new pavement installation.

STOP & SHOP SUPERMARKET PARKING LOT REHABILITATION BOROUGH OF QUEENS, NEW YORK

The subject parking lot is part of the Stop & Shop supermarket located at 8989 Union Turnpike in Glendale, Borough of Queens, New York. The site is bounded by railroad tracks to the north and east, Union Turnpike to the south, and baseball fields to the west. The property was developed with a factory which was renovated into the existing supermarket. The former factory structure was partially demolished within the northern and western areas leaving the former factory’s slab to serve as the parking lot area for the supermarket.

JZN provided geotechnical investigation services in support of the parking lot rehabilitation. The services included pavement visual observation, and exploration soil borings to obtain information on subsurface soils and groundwater conditions within the distressed parking area. Pavement core samples were acquired during the investigation to determine the pavement structure. JZN determined the pavement distress was caused due to uncontrolled fill materials that were unable to support traffic loads. In addition, the pavement was originally designed for interior use and the pavement exposure to weather was contributing to the increased pavement distress.

Due to the poor conditions of the pavement, JZN recommended its complete replacement. Additional recommendations included bearing surface preparation procedures and pavement structure specifications.

HUBBARD’S COMMONS PARKING LOT REHABILITATION BOROUGH OF QUEENS, NEW YORK

The subject parking lot is part of the Hubbard’s Commons located at 713 Sunrise Highway and Hubbard’s Path in West Babylon, Suffolk County, New York. The site is bounded by Sunrise Highway to the south, Hubbard’s Path to the east, a residential development to the north, and an empty lot to the west.

JZN provided geotechnical investigation services in support of the parking lot rehabilitation. The investigation services consisted of drilling soil boring explorations and conducting visual examinations of the pavement in order to obtain information on subsurface soils, groundwater conditions, and pavement composition.

JZN provided multiple options to rehabilitate the distressed parking lot area. These options included milling followed by overlay and a full depth repair. In addition, JZN provided site preparation, earthwork and construction recommendations, and new pavement design criteria.

STOP & SHOP SUPERMARKET PARKING LOT REHABILITATION BOROUGH OF QUEENS, NEW YORK

The subject parking lot is part of the Stop & Shop supermarket located at 64-45 Myrtle Avenue in Glendale, Queens Borough, New York. The site is bounded by Central Avenue to the north, Cypress Hills Street to the southwest, Myrtle Avenue to the south, and 65th Street to the east.

JZN provided a comprehensive geotechnical investigation that included exploration soil borings to explore the subsurface conditions at the site, pavement coring to determine the pavement structure, and pavement visual inspection to determine the degree of pavement distress.

Our field exploration revealed a pavement composition consisting of a thin former pavement section covered by a newer pavement section. These observations allowed us to determine that the pavement distresses were possibly caused by cracking from the former underlying relatively thin pavement section.

JZN provided recommendations regarding site preparation, soil management and construction considerations in support of the pavement rehabilitation program. Our pavement rehabilitation recommendations included details for a mill and overlay option and a new pavement construction.
